Hi Richard,
There is really no standard length for a braille line. For books on paper it is
typically 40 characters, but not always. However, what you refer to is more the
length of a line as read by a braille display or a braille notetaker.
Again, there is no standard. Display line lenght can be whatever - 18, 20, 32,
40, 65 or 80 characters, depending on how rich somebody is. Notetakers are
typically 18, 20, 32 or 40 characters per line.
But not to fuss: all braille displays/notetakers I have ever seen have keys (or
keystrokes) that will shift the currently-displayed content left or right
("panning") or move up or down to the next line. It is usually the screen
reader (Jaws, for example) that controls what is on the display, so since you
are familiar with Jaws, just do your planning with that in mind.
It is just that if information lines up in columns on the screen, a braille
display can move a line down and find the same field at the same location on
the display, rather than the user having to read the line to get to the same
column as in the previous line.
