I think an ampersand (&) would work if it isn't used elsewhere in the book. A quick search should tell you if it is used. Fortunately, ampersand is also a single-cell character in Braille like the asterisk is. You could put a proofreader's note, or perhaps the symbol could be used in the author's explanation. I just proofed a book of modern poetry and the author almost never wrote "and" but always used &.
