It sounds like it is a fancy (ornamental) mark used like a footnote marker. Since the asterisk is already used for separating verses, I'd use some other single symbol rather than a whole word like ornament or pepper. I'm not sure what I would use as that character though. Squinted at in just the right way, an ampersand (&) might look like a pepper. That would of course depend on whether & is used in the text. I just proofed a book of modern poetry and the author almost never wrote "and" but always used &.

Here is the translator's note that explains "To facilitate reference the poems and fragments are arranged in the order of the standard edition of Lobel& Page. Each is preceded by an ornament and followed by its number in this edition in square brackets The ornnament precedes the fragment and then is the bracketed pages. I use an asterisk, as was told to me is proper, between stanzas. cindy --- On Fri, 6/10/11, Susan Lumpkin<slumpkin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote:From: Susan Lumpkin<slumpkin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: suggestion needed To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Date: Friday, June 10, 2011, 7:25 PM Excuse my ignorance, Cindy, but what is the symbol supposed to indicate? I started using [ornament] and thought I'd use a symbol instead; first I thought of< then the section symbol because it's so pretty but then it occurred to me that that might be annoying to hear, and I don't know if it exists in braille, so what would be least annoying to you members; I could write pepper wwithout bracketstbrackets,or would that be confusing. I can't use an asterisk because that's used elsewhere. What would be least annoying to hear and easiest to "read" in braille. I hope to be able t upload this tonight or tomorrow, if the site works and if I finish as I hope, so whatever advice I get first I'll use.
