Whenever you open a file in a Word Processor the file is converted to that word processors default format. That means that if you open an RTF in Word that RTF will be in Word format for the time it is open. It is only converted to RTF again when you save it. That is why you will often get that message about losing formatting if you save in a format other than DOC. This means that whether you are told about it or not, or whether you intend it or not, your RTFs are being converted when they are opened and there isn't a single thing you can do about it.

The same is true about opening RTFs in Kurzweil or just about any other program. I agree about doing as little converting as possible, but the advice not to save in another format when that format is your word processors default is pointless. Just don't save in yet another format, and remember to get it saved as RTF before uploading to bookshare.

There is a chance of things changing when changing from one format to another. I would find whatever option you need to set so that Word opens your files in the original format, in this case .rtf. I am sure there is a command to prevent word from automatically converting another format to rtf.
