[bksvol-discuss] Re: questions from a new volunteer

I found out what it was...I think...my short synopsis was too long, and like you say, it's hard to find that error message. I think I had thought that it might stop me after 200 characters. That would actually be an excellent, and very simple (as far as I know...anyway), change to make.

Hi Julie,
The short synopsis has always given me an error when it was the culpret. I think some folks forget that the message won't be read to them when using JAWS' forms mode. It has to do with the placement of the error message relative to the textarea object. Thus I always recommend using the find feature to locate the word error.

The only field that doesn't seem to generate error messages in my experience is when there's an apostrophy in the filename. Robin said it might have been a return character at the beginning of the long synopsis that held her book up. I plan to test that theory in a little bit when I submit a book.

I'll pass any findings along to the list and Gustavo (for inclusion in v2.0)

Best,
Jake

Hi, Robin, and welcome to Bookshare! It is a wonderful service and I'm ever
so grateful for it. Have you signed up to be a volunteer yet? Since you're
already a member, you'll need to contact
volunteer@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
because, for some reason, when you try to fill out an application to be a
volunteer from the site, you get an error that you're already a member.
Anyway, you'll need to do that before you can validate anything that has
already been submitted. As for your submissions, do the file names have any
punctuation marks in them, like commas, apostrophes or anything of the sort,
short of the periods that make up the file extension? That causes an error
that the system doesn't specify, as does going over the 200 allotted
characters for the short synopsis. The ISBN can also sometimes be a problem,
so if all else fails and you entered the ISBN, try taking that out. Take
care.

HI All,

I have just come on-board. Bookshare.org is a wonderful service, and
I say that all the more because I am originally from Canada where we
aren't allowed to have such a service--copyright laws of course!

Anyway, I want to dive in and start contributing, but I'm not sure what
this whole verification process is about. I was mosying around the Web
site, and found the page where we volunteers download things to be
verified. I'm not sure what is expected in the verification process,
though. Are we expected to read the whole book (not a problem for me, of
course)? What processs do we follow to upload them to the site? Is it the
same process as used for submitting books.

About submitting books: I submitted a few yesterday and dind't have a
problem. Today, I can't seem to submit anything. I've tried with two
seperate books and I'm always told there are errors in my form, but not
what they are. (when I submitted books yesterday and made mistakes, it
seemed very clearly marked what those mistakes were.) It's very
frustrating as I have about 5 more books I'd like to submit from my
collection.

Thanks for any pointers.

Cheers,

Robin
