I want to thank all of you who answered my plea for your thoughtful and helpful suggestions. I followed Lynn's because I didn't want to open the book in Kurzweil. My only problem was that when I opened the file, I got into the file conversion list. This was the second time I did this because the first time I chose HTML and ended up on-line in Windows Explorer. Lynn, if you could help me with what I did wrong, I would be most grateful. When I ended up in the file conversion list I was in My computer with the book already unpacked. I feel that I am learning a lot with this experience but realize how much more I have to learn. It might be better to go off list with your answer; my E-mail is jillocon@xxxxxxxxxxx Thank you all again. Jill ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lynn I" <lynnskyi@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Hi Jill,

I'm not sure if this will be helpful or not ... but here is how I read
Bookshare books on my Braille display.

I download the book in DAISY format. When I unpack the book, I use the
option available on Bookshare for an HTML version of the book. I believe
it's designed so that those without Victor Soft, FS Reader, and other such
applications can read them.

After I unpack the book, I highlight the HTML file, open it, and do a "Save as". From there, I save the file in text format. However, you can, if you
choose, just read the HTML file, itself.

You should be able to read it in Grade I or Grade II Braille, whatever your
Braille Display is currently set to read in.

I don't use the BRF files because it hasn't been necessary. I know you can
unpack books directly into Kurzweil or OpenBook. There are many ways to
accomplish the same objective. This is just what I do, and it works for me.

hth

Lynn

If anyone unpacks books on their computer to read with a braille display,
can you please tell me what application I should be in to read the book. I
am getting an error message on opening the book but the statement that the
unpack was successful. I am in MS Word and when I highlight the book I get a
"file conversion" message and then information about Eastern European,
Chinese etc. Thanks to anyone who can help me with this. Jill
