I have had a 3600, 3800, and a 3900, Evan. The 3800 was significantly faster
(don’t know numbers, sorry) than the 3600. The 3900 is maybe a little faster,
not sure, but sounds different; more “plastic-y?” I have had it over 2 years,
and love how easily the cover comes off as an added bonus.
The 4800 is not in our budget, but I think it is a PC only unit anyway. Specs
say it is nearly twice as fast and the book edge margin is an amazing 2 mm
(compared to 6 mm on the 3900). I would say it is a significant bump in specs
if it fits your budget.

Thanks Valerie, that’s good to know.
As I mentioned, my 3600 has been a workhorse for six years and over 500
books. But it certainly can’t last forever, and it has jammed up a couple
times in the past few months. Fortunately, turning it off and on two or three
times managed to get it back on track; but I’m getting the feeling that soon
I’ll have to say farewell to it.
I’ve heard that the 4800 is very speedy, and I would like something really
fast. Actually getting the pages scanned is the biggest bottleneck in terms
of the amount of time it takes when getting a book done. Most of the time, my
PC seems to be able to recognize pages faster than this 3600 can scan them,
so I would like something appreciably faster at doing the scanning. But the
4800 is also more than twice the price of the 3900. When it does come time to
decide which one to get, it’s good to know that I’ll be able to compare the
4800 and the 3900 and decide which one is the better deal.

No, the beauty of this machine is it now works on both platforms. Previously
we had to keep a PC just to use a package scanner. My world is infinitely
less complex now. ;-)
Thanks!

Yes, I saw OS X Tiger mentioned on one of my Amazon results. Does that mean
that this model won’t work with Windows machines?

I love the 3900 because it's Mac compatible. Best wishes with whatever
scanner you purchase. :-)
Thanks!

What about the 3900. I just looked on Amazon and there seem to be some of
those available, and for less than the few 3800 models they have left.

My faithful Plustek 3800 scanner of some years let me finish my book last
night.
But this morning, when going for page one of a new book.
She clattered and then stopped with a huge high whining sound.
I think it is mechanical. But who knows if anyone can or will fix it.
Repeated attempts and so on is a replicated no go.
I checked on Amazon and elsewhere, and it appears that this model may be
getting hard to find.
Or if available it is very very much scalper price prohibitive.
Do any of you know about finding a replacement Plustek 3800?
Or does someone know what model is the new and shiny and good performer for
our book scanning endeavors?
For now, I guess I am out of commission.
I just submitted today, this title:
Bob Wills: Hubbin’ It
A 1995 republication of a 1938 biography of the western swing music pioneer.
The author is Ruth Sheldon.
With an introduction by Charles R. Townsend, who wrote a larger biography
on Wills called San Antonio Rose.
Maybe my Plustek scanner just got tired of reading about Wills’ swing
music. <grin>
Thanks.
