Hi E.,

Original message:
What's wrong with writing
sqrt(4/x)

as a equation for example?

It reads fine with math symbols turned on and ought to translate just
fine into braille from rtf.

No, E., this is a technical probhlem which needs to be looked at by a professional transcriber. It may translate fine in the DAISY stuff, but will not translate into nemeth for the braille stuff. This kind of math stuff was mentioned by Jim Fruchterman in his presentation as one of the things which needs to be address and will be made possible by the grant. The representation of equations and especially higher level math symbols is difficult. Best not to futz with it, especially if we want to have the info correct for text books. There are ways to transcribe higher level math, but I'm not familiar with them. All I know is that it's really a different kettle of fish from transcribing regular text. Basic algebra might be done, but anything with complicated signs might not be possible.
