You will find a description of how lighting has advanced over time. It gives a rather good description of gas jet lighting in Victorian and Georgian England.

As you will see, originally gas jet lighting was very poor and anyone trying to read by it had to place their reading materials very close to the jet to be able to read. Later a modification added a mantle which caused the light to be brighter and it gave much more light to a room.
