Hi, Sue, it's because one pronunciation uses a guttural letter in the
beginning of the word and the other one doesn't use it. I was raised using
the first pronunciation. You can hear guttural letters in German, Russian,
Arabic, Hebrew, and to a lesser extent, in Spanish. Regards, Kim.
