Hi Cindy and Jim,
Cindy, I'm not sure what the Bookshare translator does with bold fonts, and
since this font was so different it worried me even more so I chose to use
all caps. If you've never had any problems with bold fonts, I trust that
and won't worry about it. I just wanted to try and do what seemed the
easiest for readability for both speech and Braille readers. It's the "not
knowing" that's getting to me, which leads into Jim's question:

Jim, like you, I would definitely like to have more information about what
the translator and/or "stripper"(?) do after a book is validated. Who
should I ask at Bookshare for this information? I know it will help me a
lot as a new validator, and maybe others, too, if we know we don't have to
worry about different fonts, what happens with bolding, removal of a big
block of white space, how bullets are translated into Braille and so on.

If there are others out here on this list that understand the process,
please weigh in. This will be great information for me as a new validator
(who wants to do a good job) as well as for my validation kit project!

Thanks in advance for any information!

Best Regards, (Does anybody ever say "Worst Regards"? <smile>)

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] fonts and validating

The only problem fonts cause in validating is if they
can't be read because they didn't scan correctly--or
if we try to duplicate them.

I have a font somewhat like that but I can't remember
which one--Sand, maybe. But I learned a long time ago,
when I tried to use a font that was similar to
cursive, that it was too difficult for Braille and
Daisy users, or one of them, anyway, so now I just use
italics and Bold.

Cindy, Did you say recently that Bold doesn't work for
Braille or Daisy and that's why you used all caps
instead? Is that what I should be doing?

G. Cindy
