A fake hold is a hold for "reader" or similar so that people who are just looking down the list for anything to check out and immediately check back in will pass over it, and so that it will get a propper proofread. Usually the talk of "nothing to proofread" means "nothing in my field of interest to proofread." Finally, the stripper is applied to your submitted books automatically; you can't use it directly.
