Now I am confused, Bud. Can you give us an example? Maybe em dashes aren't what you have in mind. On the other hand, if it is a British mystery, some of those authors use a lot of em dashes. Even though I;m not English or an author, I'm afraid I use a lot of em dashes when I write. But if you can't understand make sense of the context because the words are incomprehensible, then maybe those are supposed to be simple hyphens and not double dashes.
