This is all I found for author info on the validation instructions. I somehow have not located any instrucions about JR. PHD MD III MSW and so forth.

Author names should be entered in the [first name] [last name] format. For example:
"Alice Walker".
If you are unsure if the entered name is the correct form, please use the "Search for Similar Authors" link. If the author you are looking for is already on Bookshare.org,
please use the same form exactly.
Do not type the words "by" before the author name.
If the book has multiple authors, enter each name separated by commas. For example:
"Stephen King, Peter Straub".
For books with translators, editors, or other contributors, list the name after the author(s) followed by a description of that person's role in parentheses. For example:
"Jules Verne, F.P. Walter (translator)" and "Walter M. Smith (editor)"
Certain books, such as governmental tracts (e.g. The U.S. Constitution, the Magna Carta) and some computer manuals (e.g. Microsoft Windows Users Manual) will appear to have no author. If no individual is listed as the author, the corporation, agency, organization or nation associated with these documents (e.g. The United States Government,
Microsoft Corporation) is an acceptable entry.

Elizabeth,

If you are seriously asking how the database deals with Jr and III, I refuse to elaborate here, see the tip for the answer.

Boy are folks not on this list going to have fun with this distinction. Given Gustavo's concern that the database cannot deal with phd and md, what allows it to deal with JR. and III?

Elizabeth,

Wrong. Jr. and III distinguish different people where as something like PhD is not given at birth to separate individuals. See Carrie's guidelines for submission fields tip at:

for what BookShare has been doing for years. Have some of us repeatedly suggested that this tip should be read? It will tell you what to do to accomidate the database.

Nevertheless, according to Gustavo's message earlier today you are to leave out III and JR. as well as acquired titles such as phd md msw. This is so we can accomodate difficulties in the database.

Dear Fellow Volunteers,

A thought about which Titles, initials and roman numerals to include in an author or editor's name on the submission or uploading form. If the initials are on the person's birth certificate, they are part of his or her name, Like Jr. or III. M D and Sgt. etc are acquired reflecting status/accomplishments acquired during a lifetime and are supposed to be skipped.

Do you think this method of deciding is sound?

Always with love,

Jonna,

Omiting Ph.d or M.D from an author's name is not illegal. I would consider those items as titles as well. They are, technically speaking, descriptors
of the author's status and thus are not required.

Seems to me that a better solution would be to omit the comma that usually appears before M.D. or Ph.D. When I think of a title, I think of Mr. or
Mrs. or Dr. So, yes, that's definitely a comment that is easily
misunderstood. I would think it would be kind of illegal, too, given the fact that it's actually part of the author's name. Seems like the complete name of the author would be equally as important as the copyright name, the
inclusion of page breaks, etc. Anyway, just my 2 cents' worth! <Smile>

I believe it has to do with the database and the fact that the database in
its present form will see phd md etc as a actual author.

The engineers are going to be busy particularly as this has been an issue
discussed on this list for over four years.

I do not understand leaving off MD and PHD. If I am going to read a book about a health problem, say heart disease, I would pay more attention to
one

a
disservice to bookshare.org readers, annoyed though Gustavo may be.

I just had a conversation with Gustavo. He says that other people
understand his comments. He was surprised I did not understand the
following to mean do not include PHD or MD in author's names. To his
"title" means MD or PHD. He seems extremely annoyed to be questioned.

Please do not include titles in author names. Please use a comma to
separate different
authors.
