If you tried replacing ^t with space and nothing changed, you definitely don't have tabs. I believe the ^w is the symbol for whitespace. I would try replacing that with space and see what you get. I'd make a backup just encase. Another thought, have you standardized font? If so, did you just do font and font size, or did you do anything with the character spacing? If you didn't do anything with the character spacing, I can send you directions for doing that, and that may clean things up.
