Cindy and Nancy,

As has already been suggested most printers can be instructed to print in pure black and white, or grayscale. I have never had a printer that required both cartriges to be full to work properly--nor can I remember having one that required both to be inserted to operate.

Laser printers are much more affordable than $250. I have seen a good personal one for under $100 on NewEgg and have one myself. You'll find that the toner costs a bit more than ink cartrages, but it lasts a LOT longer. I've printed well over 500 sheets on mine and have yet to change the toner.

HTH,
Jake

We had a color printer. I did use the color to
download some things from online, and then I stopped
and just used the black ink, when we found out how
expensive it was to replace the ink. When the black
ink ran out, we found we couldn't replace just the
black but had to get both cartridges--expensive. We
stopped using that printer altogether, since black is
good enough for us, as what we do mainly is print
text.

Nancy, I went online and found a monochrome (which I
assume means black) laser printer for $249 reviewed on
PC Magazine at this URL:

It looks big, though. I don't know if it would fit on
your desk. Pentax has some for $350 (rounded off).

Amazon seems to sell them, too. To paraphrase and old
commercial--you're probably too young to remember--let
your fingers do the walking...in this case, let google
to the searching. smile

Hello Nancy:

You can leave the color cartridges in an inkjet
printer and not worry about them. In fact, I suggest
not removing a color cartridge as the printer was
designed to work with it installed. In fact, if a
color capable printer doesn't have a color cartridge
installed, it may not work. You should be able to
set print preferences to only print black and white.

Regards,

Robert

  Good Day Book Sharians,

For several days I have been searching for
something I thought would be pretty easy to
find...boy was I wrong.
I have a small computer desk and I am looking for
a simple, small footprint black and white inkjet
printer that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. All I
am planning to use it for is to print out my
correspondence. I have no need for colors. Don't
they make B/W printers anymore?

Everything seems so involved in printing photos.

If I have to get a color printer, would it run all
right if I took the color cartridges out and just
used the black ink?

  I would appreciate suggestions.

  Thanks,
  Nancy
