American Pageant. Has pictures, cartoons, graphs. It would be an absolute bastard to scan with stuff on almost every page. I had thought of scanning it which is how I know. RFBD has an audio copy. There's also Boorstin's (spelling), American Experience in 3 volumes (might also be called National Experience or that might be one of the components).
