Those language settings do not effect recognition. They only effect reading. They should not be necessary while you are scanning and recognizing, though they won't cause any harm. They can be a little frightening when reading, as short paragraphs with a lot of proper names can cause the K1000 to suddenly switch into a different reading voice.
