Pavi,
A thought regarding this. Angle brackets are used to encase html tags.
Programs like Word sometimes recognize them as such, and browsers certainly do.
What happens when you have angle brackets to encase text in this fashion when
you create an html file from a Daisy extraction? I've been using square
brackets like [ and ] just for this reason.

Thanks for making that important clarification Bob!
And to respond to Devorah -- angle brackets was what Carrie put forward as a
standardized method. If there is a preference among the volunteers to use
square brackets instead I don't think she would have a problem with changing
that at this point -- but ultimately we'd like to put forward one or the other
as the standard, and not deviate from it.
All good things,

Those using screen readers will note that their screen reader says "less"
for the left angle bracket, and "greater" for the right angle bracket.

Hi Marilyn and Lori,
Thanks for writing for clarification -- here's an example:
<Photo caption: The author outside his childhood home, 1978>
The keystroke used for the angle brackets are the shift key with the comma
key for the open bracket
And the shift key with the period key for the close bracket.
Hope this helps!

Hi, Pavi.
I don't understand where the actual words "Photo caption:" go --
inside or outside the
angle brackets? Could you show me a small sample?

Hi All,
In a recent exchange with a volunteer, the question of how to deal
with photos and captions came up. I talked to Carrie to see if she
had a particular approach that we could then try and standardize
across the board (with such things there tend to be no right or
wrong methods but it would be great to slowly but surely try to
develop a uniformity of approach)
Here are the guidelines Carrie put forward for such cases:
* Remove the photos
* Retain the caption text.
* Separate it from the rest of the text with angle brackets <>
* Precede the text of the caption with "Photo caption:" to make it
clear what the text is.
Let me know if there are any questions regarding this.
Also -- if there are other areas where you think we need to
formulate a standardized approach please let me know -- and we can
start working on them. (These sort of things are really helpful to
start clarifying as we work on making the scanning and validation
manual more comprehensive and complete).
