It probably has something to do with the font in which the book was printed, making dashes and hyphens indistinguishable. I think I would replace them with a double hyphen.

In most books, there is usually a long dash or a double dash there. My question is, should I put in double dashes where there ought to be a pause in the reading of the text instead of the single dash? This would diferentiate the single dash (or hyphen) from the double dash where there should be a pause. Thanks!
