8/20 6AM to 10:30AM 75º rising to 90º clear changing to partly/ mostly cloudy

So much of birding is being in the right place at the right time. This morning I was at Honey Cypress slough (part of the Grassy Pond/ Powell's Lake Unit of the Sloughs) looking for any shore birds. Contrary to last weekend when there were plenty of Great Blue Herons (50) & Great Egrets (300), this weekend no Great Egrets, a just a few Great Blues. I was watching some juv. Little Blue Herons (8). I had been there about 5 minutes when I looked up and two White Pelicans came soaring over checking out the slough. They flew from one end to the other and back and then settled on the water. They seemed less shy of me than the Great Blues.

The White Pelicans were a first for me in Henderson Co. and KY. I have seen hundreds down in Texas but never here.

Even though it was hot and muggy the Pelicans made my birding day.

Highlights:

1574 slough:
Great Blue Heron
Killdeer (here and everywhere else)

Honey Cypress slough:
White Pelicans 2
Great Blue Herons 10
Little Blue Herons 8 Juv.
Cooper's Hawk

Gentle Pond slough & impoundment:
Solitary Sandpiper
Dickcissels 10
Orchard Oriole female
Sedge Wren 2
(too many Deer Flies)

Pond Creek slough:
Common Moorhen 1
(even more Deer Flies)

Shorebird Unit next to Hardy Slough:
Great Blue Heron
Little Blue Heron
Solitary Sandpiper
Least Sandpiper 3
(Deer Flies)

The recent rains have not helped put any water in the dried or drying sloughs; just added to the humidity.
Habitat for shorebirds is really disappearing.
