In the main, high wind isn't good for birding, yet I've had several lucky
sightings during this unpleasant wind event. (1.) Yesterday morning, while
watching the weather on WBKO, a Bald Eagle crossed my field of view out
the west window. Just glimpsed it briefly as it glided by, but an all
white tail on a large soaring bird is unmistakable. (2.) This morning, a
few minutes after leaving the house, 10 gulls passed by headed south. I
didn't see any markings on them at all. The only thing I noticed about
them is that they were white beneath and pale gray above. I didn't see any
black wingtips. I assumed that wouldn't be enough to tell what they were,
but after looking at Sibley, my suspicion is Glaucous Gull (3.) Got a good
look at the Red-shouldered Hawk on a dead snag in the barn lot. (4.)
Decided to cut through the stable on the way back from a walk down the
road. A Barn Owl was perched on the old hay fork suspended just below the
ridge row. It immediately flew out the front window and disappeared. That
very thing has has happened before, but only one other time, about 40 some
odd years ago. I knew if I kept watching for it, it would happen again.
I'm a patient man.
