Cedar Waxwings appeared here on Thursday evening and, by last evening, they
were zooming everywhere. I initially thought I was seeing one very-busy
flock...because Waxwings are very busy! But, I’m now thinking I’m seeing
separate groups that are on their way north. Early this morning, I startled a
group of about 30 that had apparently roosted in the Japanese maple, near the
porch. As I’m writing this, about a dozen of them landed in the top of the
nearby pin oak tree. You Northerners should keep an eye out.
Also, I’ve noticed that our White-crowned Sparrow numbers are down. In the
past, I would’ve assumed that meant that they were leaving, but it finally
occurred to me that, through the winter, we keep track of numbers by how many
juveniles and how many mature birds we see. Our numbers are down because
everybody has a shiny new crown, now, and we can’t tell them apart; they are
all dressed for summer. Our past experience says they should be here for at
least two weeks, yet.
