BFREE is located adjacent to one of the last unspoiled places in Central America, the Bladen Nature Reserve. We currently looking for an experienced birder to work from December through May. The position must be filled immediately and we would ask that you review it and forward it to any persons you think may be interested. In fact, that is exactly how we heard about our job!! The project title is "An Integrated Community-Based Harpy Eagle and Avian Conservation Program for the Maya Mountains Massif". The goal of the project is to build capacity for avian conservation in the Maya Mountains by enhancing the links between protected areas and their surrounding communities. The project objectives include: 1. To initiate survey and monitoring of Harpy Eagles in the Bladen Nature Reserve (BNR) as a complement to the current on-going Belize Harpy Eagle Reintroduction in southern Belize. 2. To initiate survey and monitoring of Neotropical migratory and resident birds in the Bladen Nature Reserve (BNR) to provide baseline data contributing to regional-scale bird conservation and sound management, while providing for community-based alternative livelihood strengthening. 3. To enhance environmental awareness of protected areas and species through environmental education BFREE is looking for a skilled birder that is familiar with both neo-tropical birds and resident birds of Central America. Responsibilities would include: * Point counts, mist-netting, and banding * Work with two local Belizeans who will be field technicians * Project starts in December with 3 weeks intensive of training (two weeks at Birds Without Borders headquarters in Belize and one week of training with the Harpy Eagle expert of Central America at BFREE) and runs through the end of May * 12 days of surveys a month; some overnight camping is involved in remote locations * Time not spent during the surveys is personal discretion. Time may be spent on personal research projects or having fun. Free room and board will be available at BFREE during this time. * Compensation will be $25US per day (12 days per month) or $300 per month plus airfare and all equipment will be provided. Latest start date would be at the beginning of January but preferably in December. This is a perfect opportunity for persons interested in conducting personal research in an area that has only had 4 birding projects ever conducted. We realize this short notice but this is the opportunity of a lifetime to spend time in one of the last unspoiled intact ecosystems on this planet. Howler monkeys will sing you to sleep each night and toucans and parrots will wake you each morning. And if you are lucky you will see a jaguar or two.
