Dear KOS, I have contacted the TVA to inquire about the lake level management study. The study is called the "Reservoir Operations Study". You can access a newsletter with current information about the study and more general information by going to www.tva.com and scrolling to the paragraph titled Reservoir Operations Study. Because the TVA is a federal agency, any action would require an environmental impact statement (EIS) be drafted and public comments accepted. The first step was the scoping phase in which the TVA received input regarding the public's views and values. After the scoping phase, the TVA designed the study to incorporate the public's views. Now they are preparing a draft EIS about the study. The draft EIS will be released in mid-July and the public can begin commenting on it immediately through letters and email. Later, in late July or early August, the TVA will hold public meetings to hear comments on the draft EIS. Shorebird habitat has been addressed in the draft EIS in 3 areas: 1) Analysis of impacts to threatened and endangered species 2) Terrestrial ecology 3) Analyzing impacts to management areas and ecological sites My name has been added to a mailing list for information on the study. When the draft EIS comes out, I will be notified and I will forward that information on to the list. You can then comment on it with your letters or emails. When the dates for the public meetings are set, I will forward that information to the list also. It is possible that the study will recommend changes to the current winter pool levels in certain lakes eliminating shorebird habitat. It is certain that commercial interests and hunting interests will have a say as will industrial/economic interests. A copy of the Environment Impact Statement, Scoping Document is available at this link: http://www.tva.com/feature_rostudy/pdf/scoping.pdf <http://www.tva.com/feature_rostudy/pdf/scoping.pdf> I urge all persons interested in bird habitat to review the study and to find a way to comment on the need to protect or enhance shorebird habitat in the TVA system of lakes. They may not hear us, but if we do not say anthing, there will be a presumption of no interest. General information on the TVA system is available at http://www.TVA.com <http://www.TVA.com> Thanks.
