The Buckley Hills Audubon Society group got together for dinner at Grey Goose in Lexington last night and then went down to the County Clerk Annex Garage top floor to watch/count swifts. We expected the communal roost to be the large smokestack behind the Lexington Fayette Government building--we'd counted 14 enter that roost on August 11th. But the number of swifts entering that stack was far below the number we actually saw on the wing. Then one of our members noticed we were watching the wrong roost -- the communal roost for this season looks like it's actually the lower wide chimney behind the warehouse behind Barney Miller's: https://maps.google.com/?ll=38.043791,-84.495602&spn=0.000478,0.00099&t=h&layer=c&cbll=38.04379,-84.495601&panoid=QAjL3Te9b8uOw-mt0jZKlA&cbp=12,4.25,,2,-31.96&z=20. Swifts were entering it by the dozens. We estimate there were about 80 birds we saw enter. I'm heading back tonight to get another look and to attempt a more accurate count. I'll also try getting some video, though the distance/dusk may make this difficult. Highlight of the evening: We can confirm the reports of a peregrine falcon living in downtown Lexington. The swifts don't like it: thrice, a flock of several dozen swifts chased it over the parking garage where we were gathered. See http://www.chimneyswifts.org/page234.html for one more night of the count. I counted here in Murray, Ky. tonight at sunset and only had 26 entering the roost (a chimney at a local school). Last week I counted 101. Seems that most of the roost had left. Maybe these are the young? Two nighthawks circled as I observed at the site.
