6/17/08 A late start for me. But a great day for birding. 9:30AM to 2PM 72º rising to 79º, clear, nice north windFirst Horseshoe Road sloughs. I've realized that this is not just one slough, but a whole complex adjacent to Horseshoe Road. Therefore the plural.
Highlight: Black-necked Stilt. At Honey Cypress Slough (GP/PL) I again located the pair of N. Shovelers. Also present were Hooded Merganser groups and families, Mallards and a single Pied-billed Grebe.
Pond Creek Marsh: the Eagles nest between PCM and Anderson Pond was deserted. But then I spotted one Adult and 2 Juvs. flying and soaring over the bean fields adjacent to the nest, never more than a 1/4 mile from the nest. It was really cool to watch. Sometimes the Juvs. swooped down almost to ground level. It was like they were really learning to fly and soar. The adult kept circling and calling. Eventually the Juvies seemed to get tired and went and landed and rested in some trees near the nest. But the Adult flew some more and then settled in a tree 1/2 mile away.
No Moorhens seen or heard. I think, in the past, when I have seen the Moorhens, it was later in the summer.
I did a quick stop at the Shorebird Unit. Nothing but a few Great Blue Herons.
