The field trip to the Sloughs WMA in Henderson County
on Sunday, April 18 will be held as scheduled. We
will meet in the parking area at Hardy Slough along
hwy 268 at 0800 cdt.

Wear clothing appropriate for marshing, and a dry
change of shoes/socks/pants makes the ride home more
comfortable. Most water will be only ankle deep, and
one may stay dry by walking the levees if preferred.
Be sure to bring lunch.

Directions to Hardy Slough are as follows:

From Audubon Parkway in Henderson, take Pennyrile Pkwy
south to Hwy 425 (first exit). Follow hwy 425 then
straight through intersection when it becomes hwy 136.
Take hwy 136 to the community of Geneva, then right
on hwy 268. Follow 268 four miles and you will see
the gravel parking area at the second observation
platform on the left.

I spent a couple of hours this morning looking at the
habitat. There are some nice areas of rail habitat,
and approximately 300 shorebirds were scattered in the
area. Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Pectoral and
Least Sandpipers, and 3 Black-necked Stilts were
observed. The stilts were near the gravel road at the
southwestern end of Muddy Slough. I also heard a
couple of Soras, and several species of waterfowl were
still present.
