This isn’t a bird list. It’s a short tale about a visit we had yesterday. I’ll
have to start with a little background. Last July, my nephew and his 10 year
old granddaughter stopped by. While here, he pointed out some of my wood
carvings to her and she refused to believe that I made them. I showed her a
carving in progress and she still didn’t believe I was making it. Then she said
she would believe I made them if I made her a shark. I made the shark.
All these many months later, she and my nephew stopped by yesterday, smack in
the middle of this time of suggested social distancing. She was out of school
and hunting for something to do. She loved the shark and wanted to keep it. I
hadn’t gotten around to putting my telescope away from my last Parsons Pond
trip. She noticed it and wanted to look through it. I followed her into the
yard with the scope, lowered the tripod, and focused it on a distant house. She
was wowed and then wanted to look at a bird. It was so hard for me to bend down
to that level to aim and focus the scope, I showed her how to do it herself.
She soon found a bird and said it had a blue head. I peeped in myself and saw
that it was a Bluebird, something I host quite a few of despite accusations of
my sub par bird house janitorial services. Time will tell if this incident
created a new birder.
