This morning, when I turned to leave right after cutting the ice on my back field pond, a short-eared owl flew up from the ground, maybe 15 or 20 feet from me. This pond has a fairly steep south facing bank which was created when a track hoe cleaned it out a few years ago. The owl was sitting on the steep incline of this bank midst very sparse weed cover. I didn't have my binoculars with me because I was cutting ice, but its very long wings, short tail and harrier like flight pattern were pretty clear cut. It flew low over a nearby hayfield until harassed by a red-tailed hawk, then headed northward.
