Migrant shorebird numbers in southern Warren County have remained low with habitat now marginal. Regular visits to Petros Pond have yielded a few Pectoral, Least, Semipalmated, Spotted, and Solitary Sandpipers. Recent trips to the Sinclair and Homestead Units of Peabody wma have also yielded small numbers of the same common species. One sighting of interest was recorded at the impoundment adjacent to the Paradise ash basin on July 29 by Nicole Ranalli and me as an adult female Least Bittern flew across the lake. A few scattered Great Egrets have been present as well as 2 Caspian Terns, including a juvenile. A Bell's Vireo was heard singing near the ash basin on the same date, and scattered Northern Harriers were present including a beautiful juvenile on Homestead. As reported by Scott Record, shorebird habitat at Mitchell Lake in Ballard County is excellent. Nicole conducted a shorebird survey there on July 27, and I joined her for a survey on the 29th. Following are numbers recorded during the surveys. In addition, a Willow Flycatcher was heard there on the 29th. dave Mitchell Lake July 27 Killdeer 500+ Semipalmated Plover 1 Pectoral Sandpiper 340+ Semipalmated Sandpiper 5-6 Least Sandpiper 32 Lesser Yellowlegs 11 Stilt Sandpiper 1 Solitary Sandpiper 5 Spotted Sandpiper 2 Mitchell Lake July 29 Killdeer 321 Semipalmated Plover 4 Greater Yellowlegs 16 Lesser Yellowlegs 21 Solitary Sandpiper 14 Spotted Sandpiper 4 Semipalmated Sandpiper 10 Least Sandpiper 24 Pectoral Sandpiper 225 Stilt Sandpiper 10 Short-billed Dowitcher 1 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
