Sigh. Mahonia is not a native species.

Mahonias were hurt a lot and may loose some branches . Most broadleaf
evergreens hate below 0 temps. Nothing you can do now but fertilize with
hollytone fertilizer in late March. That should give them a boost
Good luck !

I thought Mahonia was indestructible. Previous years, birds flocked to the
berries. The freeze has turned the leaves brown & I assume they will fall
off. Likewise, the blooms have frozen, thus no berries.
Looks like Holly trees are fine. Not sure about their berries.

Subject: [birdky] Re: Red cedar berry crop missing . . . .
Cedar berries were minimal this fall around my place. Nonexistent now.
Because of the droughty conditions that shriveled grapes, green briar fruits,
hackberry, dogwood and others, I think the birds got after the cedars earlier
than usual. Poison ivy berries are at a premium too around here. Even coral
berries have been scarfed down. It’s only early January and I’m worried about
what the birds will eat. Unfortunately, invasive bush honeysuckle and
wintercreeper berries are still around.

During the fall I noticed that *none* of the red cedars on my farm had a
berry crop. As I have toured much of the state doing CBCs, I've not noticed
cedar berries *anywhere.* I actually didn't think that ever happened, but
it seems to be the case this year. A missing cedar berry crop has meant
*very* low numbers of soft-mast eaters on CBCs including Yellow-rumped
Warblers, Cedar Waxwings, American Robins, and Hermit Thrushes. All of
these species that I have found in low numbers on CBCs have been eating
other berries, mostly fruits of Hackberry and Poison ivy.
I was wondering if there is *anyone* across the state who can say that they
are seeing berries on their red cedars this winter? I'm curious how wide
ranging this absence is?
