I spent a couple of days over the last two weeks birding areas around Louisville with a trip to Bernheim yesterday. I went to an area of Jefferson Memorial Forest I've been meaning to check out with favorable results, to say the least. Highlights: Scott's Gap Jefferson Memorial Forest Thursday, July 17 5:00-7:00pm Northern Parula-1 singing Yellow-throated Warbler-1 singing Hooded Warbler-scolding Yellow-breasted Chat-a couple singing(if you can call it that, maybe spazzing out) Acadian Flycatcher- calling Great-crested Flycatcher-heard Summer Tanager-several a family of Blue-gray Gnatcatchers abundant-Indigo Bunting and Common Yellowthroat the grassland there is small but promising for migrants Scott's Gap JMF Wednesday, July 24 8:00-9:50am all warblers except Common Yellowthroat stopped singing Northern Parula- a small family comprised of 3-4 individuals Northern Oriole-a small group of 5 individuals comprised of fem./imm. imm. Red-sh. Hawk Blue-gray Gnatcatcher-3 or so chasing each other and doing amazing maneveurs through the trees Blue Grosbeak-1 beautiful male chasing other birds out of his territory except Indigo buntings I have hoped to find this bird nesting or summering in the JMF area as long as I have been going there it seemed like such a small area of habitat that I just dismissed the idea. Bernheim Forest Wed.
