Thanks to Jamie for passing along word of the Yellow Rail.
Eight or ten folks came over at 700 and we all had a *real* treat ... seeing
the bird crouching in the grass stubble and skulking around mouse-like in the
cover. Some got some pics of it.
This bird is *particularly* sneaky; I did not even see it when I was mowing the
field earlier today; it only kicked up right in front of the tractor as I was
raking the windrows. When everyone got there, we tried walking the rows, but
didn't kick it up, so I pulled the tractor into the field and raked the
windrows I had left. Of course it was in the *last* one I raked, and then it
got about six inches off the ground and skittered over to the one I had just
raked ... crazy, crazy little birds, but so spectacularly beautiful. I could
have grabbed it, but we decided just to let it be, of course.
From past experience, I think there is a chance the bird will still be out
there tomorrow; I still have to bale the straw in which the bird is hiding, so
I will work that part of the field at noon if anyone cares to stop by. It might
be good if you email me before 1100 so I know to expect you.
I think this is the 7th Yellow Rail I've had on the farm over the years, all
while working the fields.
