I spent a couple of hours at Wolf Creek Dam mid-day today in search of the
hide-and-seek Eared Grebe. It mostly hid as I sought, but I finally was able to
see it very well, albeit at a greater distance than I had hoped. Very poor
documentary pics on an eBird list later or tomorrow.
If I saw the same bird that Lyle Bontrager photographed a few days ago, it is
*really* molting quickly. Today the entire neck was jet black and ears (golden
plumes) were seemingly complete. The entire body also appears blackish.
Anyone looking for this bird should know that it must be spending quite a bit
of time in the *second* bay to the east of the overlook along US 127 on the
south side of the dam. I saw it come out of that bay after a long period of
absence, and as I was leaving it appeared to be heading back that way. A boat
caused it to retreat from the bay for about 30 minutes or I almost wouldn't
have seen it at all!
Not much else on the lake. I did take a scan of Green River Lake on the way
home and had maybe 350 Bonaparte's Gulls and 40+ Horned Grebes, but not much
else.
Over the past few days I've looked at big sections of Barren River Lake, Green
River Lake, and Lake Cumberland and have seen only four species of ducks in
numbers from 2 to 10!
