Jamie Baker and I toured several waterbird sites in west-central KY yesterday.
Shorebird numbers were pretty low, perhaps many were on the move with nice
weather; especially Pectoral Sandpipers were scarce for the time of year? We
tallied 9 species; the best numbers were at a relatively small pond along US 79
in Todd County where we had 64 Greater Yellowlegs, 27 Lesser Yellowlegs, 4
Pectoral Sandpipers, and 10 Least Sandpipers with a few Killdeer and Wilson's
Snipe. The transient pond along John U. Young Road in sw. Logan County had 13
Greater Yellowlegs.
Morgan Pond in Christian County was not as birdy as I thought it would be. The
only shorebirds were a few Wilson's Snipe and Greater Yellowlegs. Common
waterfowl and American Coots were relatively numerous. One male wigeon appeared
to have some Eurasian genetic influence with a creamy cap patch and pale head
with no green at all.
At scattered transient lakes in southern Warren County, including McElroy Lake,
we had an early Semipalmated Plover, 2 Solitary Sandpipers, and 5 American
Golden-Plovers to round out the shorebirds. Waterfowl were all common stuff.
Along KY 85 (Anton Road) in ne. Hopkins County, we had two groups of mostly
Brewer's Blackbirds totaling 150 birds (120+ & 30+).
As posted previously, we did get to see Frank Lyne's Harris's Sparrow ... :o)
