Eddie Huber, Matt Stickel, and I birded from Louisville to Green River Lake and
back today. We tallied 20 species of waterfowl and the previously reported
Red-throated Loon and Eared Grebe. It was certainly refreshing to experience
above-freezing temps and relatively calm winds for a change.

Highlights:

Green River Lake -- previously reported RED-THROATED LOON was off the state
park marina this morning; at one point it took off and circled around a couple
of times before heading south towards the dam but then returned right back to
where it had taken off from; previously reported EARED GREBE was missed on the
first pass by the dam, but picked up at the nw. corner of the dam the second
time; 215+ Horned Grebes, at least 20 Common Loons; all 3 mergansers including
2 Red-breasteds and 5 COMMONS in the bend s. of the state park campground;
several Bald Eagles. The water at the end of Corbin Bend Road was only sparsely
inhabited by waterbirds; most were seen from the state park campground to off
the dam.

Campbellsville City Lake -- one small hole in the ice with nice array of small
numbers of ducks including Bufflehead and Ruddy Ducks.

McDougal Lake along KY 916 se. of Hodgenville -- only a small area of open
water, but probably 1000 Mallards, several hundred Canada Geese, Gadwall, Am.
Black Ducks, and one adult TUNDRA SWAN.

Larue County Sportsman's Lake -- 1 white morph Snow Goose with many Canada
Geese next door; small area without ice had small numbers of Canvasback,
Redhead, No. Shoveler, 1 Green-winged Teal, etc.

Freeman Lake -- 2 holes in the ice inhabited by mostly common waterfowl; 10
Hooded Mergansers and 6 Green-winged Teal probably the best birds.

Jim Beam Lake along KY 245 at Bernheim Forest -- 1 Northern Pintail and 7
Canvasback with commoners.

We ended the day at the Falls of the Ohio/Ashland Park -- continuing BLACK
SCOTER out in the middle of the river upstream of the park; at least 550
Ring-billed Gulls on the fossil beds at the Falls; at least 6 Herring Gulls in
their company [NO Ivory Gull among them].
