Thanks to Wayne Tamminga, Charlie Logsdon, and Erin Harper with Ky Dept of Fish and Wildlife Resources for forwarding roost counts at Barren River Lake and western Hardin County from the past couple of days. The results answer at least in part what the birds have been up to during the cold weather ... at least a portion of the population reverse migrated back south in the face of the Siberian Express. Barren River Lake numbers went from just over 900 on 6 February to almost *5000* Monday evening. Thanks, Wayne. Western Hardin County went from 3500-4000 last week (thanks, Charlie Logsdon) to more than *15,000* yesterday!!! Thanks, Erin. At both places, birds are not doing much moving around, but loafing together at roost spots in big groups during the coldest days, although both Wayne and Erin report dancing and displaying this week. Not sure if they will head back north on the warmer weather today or this weekend, but it's apparently not too late to still get some nice viewing in.
