Three short-eared owls were observed yesterday (Feb. 28) on the new Letcher Tract of the Clay WMA. About 90 acres of old pasture field were burned along the Licking River. The owls held tight in the unburned grass until the fire closed in. The owls floated out and were visible again on the blackened ground. Red-tailed hawks and kestrels began hunting almost immediately after the fire for all the meadow voles scurrying around without cover. Some friends observed what they thought were short-eared owls on the Booth Tract of Clay WMA on the Fleming County side of the river. This was about a week ago.
