There are still thousands of Sandhill Cranes in the farmland west of Cecilia. Yesterday afternoon, Amy Covert and I spent 2 or 3 hours touring the area. There were hardly any birds in the vicinity of the KY 86 Fire Station until sunset, and then not even more than hundreds. Area ponds have dropped significantly during the past week, so birds are roosting on ponds up to a few miles away. There were particularly nice and close groups of foraging cranes on the roads down around Dranes Lakes (via KY 1375) on down towards Stephensburg. Was able to stop along the roads at several places and hear the birds walking thru the corn stubble and give quiet foraging and bickering calls I've never heard before. There were other big groups out St. John Road (KY 1357) west of the jct. with KY 1375 north of Franklin Crossroads yesterday. No big white ones seen yesterday, unfortunately. bpb, Louisville ================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBERS============== When posting on BIRDKY, please close posts with your first and last name and your address (city or county). * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * To post on BIRDKY, send e-mail to: birdky@xxxxxxxxxxxxx * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Visit the KOS website at http://www.biology.eku.edu/kos/default.htm * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Visit the KOS Photo Page to view photos of birds recently sighted in Kentucky: http://www.flickr.com/groups/kentucky_ornithological_society/pool * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * To unsubscribe, send e-mail to: birdky-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject line. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * BIRDKY List Manager: Gary Ritchison.
