Returned to Markland Dam pool on the Ohio River for awhile yesterday morning; birded Meldahl pool from US 52 in Ohio during the afternoon. Much less activity that three weeks ago and day before, but still some highlights: Markland Dam to Warsaw, Gallatin Co.: Red-necked Grebe ... 5 at Craig's Creek (could have missed 2 afternoon before) Long-tailed Duck ... 11 off Warsaw; 1 female with Canvasbacks above Craig's Creek White-winged Scoter ... groups of 9, 22, 5, & 4, most between the dam and mouth of Craig's Creek Decent numbers of Aytha divers but no huge flocks NO gulls other than Ring-billed & Herring (1/2 of # of Herring as previous day) Meldahl Dam to Ripley, Ohio: Red-necked Grebe ... 3 along KY shore 1/4 to 1/2 mile above Meldahl Dam; 2 off Higginsport, OH Long-tailed Duck ... 1 male with other divers off Higginsport, OH; flock of at least 16 with Lesser Scaup near KY shore above the mouth of White Oak Creek, OH White-winged Scoter ... 1 downstream from Chilo Park; flock of 61(!) on OH side of the channel upstream from Augusta, KY Mute Swans ... now seen only back in the mouths of creeks on OH side (several places) Dabblers: small numbers but quite a few scattered Mallards, 50+ American Black Ducks scattered; 15 Northern Pintail Divers: again, many fewer than a few weeks ago; still tallied in excess of 200 Common Mergansers, but many additional birds back in creek mouths on OH side now that some have thawed. Most numerous are now Lesser Scaup, Red-breasted Mergansers, & Redheads with slightly fewer Common Goldeneye & Canvasback; a few more migrant Ring-necked Ducks & Bufflhead scattered.
