Mark Monroe and I joined Tom Durbin and Rickey Shive for various periods of
time at McElroy Lake this afternoon. Thanks to Tom for putting the rest of us
on the gallinule, which continues along the edge of its weed patch on the west
side of Three Springs Road. The second-year Franklin's Gull also continues,
working mostly along the western shoreline today. Hundreds of swallows had
returned on the cool, northwest winds. Also a single Black Tern. Rickey put us
on a tardy Sandhill Crane he'd seen fly in before we got there, plus the
gorgeous female Wilson's Phalarope. A Peregrine Falcon (or multiples) made four
passes over the lake in about an hour's time.
Shorebird highlights included 12 Black-bellied Plovers, lots of Semi Plovers, a
tardy Wilson's Snipe with a bad leg, a single Greater Yellowlegs, at least 8
White-rumped Sps, 6 Short-billed Dowitchers, the phalarope, at least 3
Sanderlings, at least 4 Dunlin (now in bright alternate plumage), and a single
Ruddy Turnstone.
