On Wednesday, May 18 Joe Metzmeier, Pam Martin, LeeAnder Williams and myself set out to see if we could find any Golden Winged Warblers using the early successional habitat on the Stearns Ranger District. We knew they could be found near the old RCW sites at the Whitley County airport, and we wanted to check some areas where pine beetle and fire had created the same habitat. We were successful. We located one on the road to the Barren Fork Horse Camp (road past the Stearns District office). There are hundreds of acres of early successional habitat in that area, but unfortunately we only had to time to sample a few sites. If you are in that area and happen to see any Golden Winged warblers please let me know.
