This response came back from Sunday's sighting of the banded Sandhill Crane west of Cecilia in Hardin County: - - - - - - - - - - - - Thank you for reporting this banded sandhill crane! It is indeed a bird banded by the International Crane Foundation. It was captured as a breeding adult male on its territory near Briggsville WI in 2001. The ICF has a long term study in this area, and we have been color marking birds here since the early 1990's. Please see this section of our website for more info: www.bandedcranes.org <http://www.bandedcranes.org/> If you have more precise geographic coordinate of where you saw this bird, and what type of landcover it was using, we will put this into our database. This information is so important to us - quite often we do not see most of the birds that we band, especially if they were banded as chicks. From sightings such as yours we are discovering not only where some birds spend the winter, but migration routes as well. We have banded over 300 birds to date; please do let us know if you see any more! Thanks again- Anne Lacy Sandhill Projects Manager International Crane Foundation E-11376 Shady Lane Road P.O.
