I ran down to Henderson and Union counties yesterday to scout habitat for
Sunday's BBC trip to the Sauerheber Unit. Didn't really hunt for birds that
hard at Sauerheber; was mostly just looking at water levels. Most areas are dry
but KDFWR is pumping water into the middle Hardy Slough pools. That and the
shorebird unit may afford the best habitat. I did hear a Marsh Wren and saw an
Orange-crowned Warbler.
I also ran down to the Camp Mines in Union County before afternoon showers
arrived and had several nice birds. A flock of 65 Greater White-fronted Geese
stopped in briefly at Camp #9, where there were also at least 160 Blue-winged
Teal, a pair of Ruddy Ducks, and a few shorebirds including 2 Dunlin. I also
had 1 + 6 Pine Siskins go over. Among a nice group of foraging swallows was a
single Cliff.
At Camp #11, a Plegadis ibis was the highlight; as is usual, I couldn't get
very close to the bird and it did not have obvious red in face, eyes, or legs,
so it was probably not identifiable to species even if I could have gotten
closer. My guess was Glossy based on what appeared to be some remnants of pale
lines on the face, but I just couldn't make things out.
There was a nice group of 1000+ dabblers that were mostly Blue- and
Green-winged Teal, but small numbers of Gadwall, wigeon, and pintails were
present. There weren't many shorebirds there, but single Black-bellied and
American Golden-Plovers and 7 Long-billed Dowitchers highlighted the list of 9
species there.
