I stepped out after work (about 5:10 PM CDT) to see if today’s unsettled
weather had shaken something loose and I wasn’t disappointed. Almost
immediately, a Merlin sped past, heading almost directly south. I watched it
until disappeared in the distance. Then, just a few minutes later, another
passed over; this one was a little lower and heading slightly east-of-south. I
got a really good look at the second, which wasn’t in as much of a hurry. We
often see Merlins here in October, but two of them is a first!
I also found a FOS juvenile White-crowned Sparrow in the pond thicket. I’ve
been checking for them every day, so I guess the weather did make a difference.
I realized, at that point, that I should probably keep a list, which follows.
We haven’t seen Hummingbirds at the feeders in several weeks, but I continue to
see them in the pond thicket.
