I was also the chosen child to gather eggs… chosen because I never
volunteered to mess with the chickens. I found the best way to avoid
pecking was to take the cattle feed scoop and literally scoop them up a few
inches off the nest. The scoop fits over the head and under their breast.
Quick, harmless, and my hands were not pecked to death.
Next time I’ll tell the 50 hens that turned out to all be roosters story… 😆
