That swap has been going on for around 5 years or so. It is a happening
place and also hosts a fresh vegetable stand and in the fall a pumpkin
patch. I personally have not stopped but have friends who look forward to
the “Chicken Swap” twice a month.

David Lindo and I birded in Hardin County this morning. We ran into mostly
regulars but highlights included about 55 Lesser Scaup and 10 Ruddy Ducks
on Freeman Lake, a pair of Loggerhead Shrikes north of Stephensburg (thanks
Jennifer Snyder for the tip), and 15 Sandhill Cranes still hanging around
at one of the roost ponds west of Cecilia.
However, . . . the real highlight for me was encountering -- for the first
time in my life -- a "CHICKEN SWAP!" Dozens of cars were pulled in to a
farm lot near Dranes Lakes; I thought it was an auction until I saw the
sign. Wondering if some of our long-time aficionados of fowl can fill us in
on what must be a rural tradition I have heretofore been ignorant of!? What
a mass of humanity all gathered in one place . .. almost creating a country
traffic jam!
