Tanner Shepard, Meg & Tommy Quarles, my sister and I enjoyed some time with the Hardin County Sandhill Cranes late this afternoon. The epicenter of activity was again at the Dranes Lakes along KY 1375. I suspect there were in the neighborhood of 2500-3000 in the immediate area. They were *not* very happy about the lakes being completely ice-covered, and groups began heading both south and northwest in search of open water to drink. I suspect by this time tomorrow they will have plenty of snow to "drink" but no food obtainable. It will be very interesting to see what they do ... simply ride it out, or head north or south. This afternoon there was a trickle of birds coming in from VERY high from the north, and I'm thinking there are at least a few birds engaged in reverse migration. With sub-zero temps later this week, and a snow pack covering all available food, one would have to think they'd head back south, but maybe they have fed well enough all winter to just lay low for several days??? bpb, Louisville ================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBERS============= When posting on BIRDKY, please close posts with your first and last name and your address (city or county). * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * To post on BIRDKY, send e-mail to: birdky@xxxxxxxxxxxxx * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Visit the KOS website at http://www.birdky.org * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Visit the KOS Photo Page to view photos of birds recently sighted in Kentucky: http://www.flickr.com/groups/kentucky_ornithological_society/pool * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * To unsubscribe, send e-mail to: birdky-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject line. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * BIRDKY List Manager: Gary Ritchison.
