Hi all, Great waterfowl day today in eastern Kentucky, with 21 species between these two spots. Cave Run Lake/Minor Clark - In addition to the 3 Red-necked Grebes, 16 duck sp. and 3 goose sp. were seen. Most of the birds were at the dam, and I never made it past Scott's Creek Mariana so who knows how much more was out there today... 28 Greater White-fronted Geese - likely the same big flock thats been around since January 1 Snow Goose - Likely the same individual since Jan 16 110 Canada Geese 2 Wood Duck - Minor Clark 7 Gadwall 5 American Wigeon 13 Mallard 2 Northern Shoveler 18 Northern Pintail 6 Green-winged Teal 25 Canvasback 27 Redhead 46 Ring-necked Duck 7 Greater Scaup 52 Lesser Scaup 11 Bufflehead 16 Hooded Merganser 15 Common Merganser 75 Red-breasted Merganser 1 Pied-billed Grebe 5 Horned Grebe 3 Red-necked Grebe - 1 by dam control tower, 1 below the NFS office, and 1 between the NFS office and Scott's Creek. All 3 visible from Stoney Cove and the dam. Photos of one on the KOS flickr page. 350+ Ring-billed Gull 20 Herring Gull Flemingsburg Reservoir - Large sheet of ice in the middle, but lots of open water and birds. 220 Canada Geese 18 Gadwall 5 American Wigeon 4 American Black Duck 35 Mallard 4 Northern Shoveler 16 Northern Pintail 3 Green-winged Teal 70 Canvasback 60 Redhead 110 Ring-necked Duck 40 Lesser Scaup 1 Common Goldeneye 45 Hooded Merganser 4 Common Merganser 1 Red-breasted Merganser 125 Duck sp. - flew in after sunset 50 American Coot 9 Ring-billed Gull I also had 5 Wilson's Snip on a farm pond along SR 32 a few miles south of Flemingsburg.
